HP LaserJet Pro M404dn

Mono laser workhorse — network-first troubleshooting for a model that often goes “offline” after DHCP changes.

Quick identity check

Confirm the control-panel product name shows LaserJet Pro M404dn (duplex + network). Drivers: use HP’s official package for M404 from support.hp.com.

Offline on the network

  1. Print the configuration page from the Reports menu and note the IPv4 address.
  2. On Windows, open Printer properties → Ports and ensure the TCP/IP port matches that address.
  3. If DHCP handed out a new IP, reserve the lease on your router or set a static IP on the printer outside the DHCP pool.
  4. Disable unused WSD queues that point nowhere.

Paper jams & pickup

The M404dn is sensitive to overfilled trays and damp A4. Clear the rear output path if duplex jobs jam. Wipe pickup rollers if multi-feeds start.

Toner alerts

HP Ultra-high yield cartridges are model-specific — mixing M404 with other LaserJet supplies triggers supply errors. Reseat firmly until the cartridge clicks.

Print quality

Vertical streaks: inspect the toner sealing tape removal and drum area per HP’s guide. Faded pages after long storage: gently rock the cartridge to redistribute toner.
